If not now, then when? ✨

Plus, the country reveal! I'm moving to...🌍🥁

Hey friend,

You’re part of the group of founding subscribers to this newsletter. I appreciate you being here! ❤️

If we haven’t formally met yet, hi! I’m Dani. I’m a Personal Finance and Travel Content Creator that was recently laid off from my job (after taking an 8-week stress leave due to burnout). I’m embarking on a journey of becoming a full-time entrepreneur as a Digital Creator because I reaaaalllly don’t want to go back to Corporate anytime soon 😅.

I’m We’re moving to… Spain! 🇪🇸

At the Spanish consulate in Toronto!

There are ~24 countries that Canadians 35 and under can move to (and the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 will be added to the list soon!).

We originally decided we were going to move to Portugal as we had both been there before and loved it, but when we visited in February, we ran into some scary encounters with “neighbourhood pharmacists” and overall just weren’t feeling the vibe 😬.

So…why Malaga, Spain? 🤔

  • The warm weather! Malaga is located in the Costa Del Sol (translation: Coast of the Sun) and has an avg. of 345 hours of sun per month with an avg. monthly temperature of 19.7 degrees celcius (Source).

  • Consumer prices (including rent) in Malaga are about 40% lower than in Toronto (Source).

  • It’s an airport city! London is 2hr50m away, Paris is 2hr30m away, Berlin is 3hr30m away, and Toronto (home) is ~9hr10m. We plan to do a lot of hopping around Europe.

My partner and I will not be working at Spanish companies. Instead, we’ll both work on our businesses, remotely, from Spain.

There’s a verrrrry long Visa process to make this happen, and we’re hoping it all goes to plan! The target move date is mid-November, but these consulates are known to move quite slowly so we’ll see how it goes! 🤞🏽

Quote of the month:

"When you really want something, the universe always conspires in your favour."

— Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
  • 47% of Canadians and 46% of Americans are living paycheque to paycheque. Among those who are currently employed, 38% of Canadians and 36% of Americans are concerned about losing their job within the next 12 months. Source.

  • On that note, over 233,442 employees have been laid off from 985 tech companies in 2023 so far. I was one of them 🙋🏽‍♀️! Source.

  • Girl math” was a hilarious (albeit controversial) trend to hit the money streets in August. An example: when you buy something using money you received from a refund on returning something else, that purchase is free (using girl math). This can obviously become dangerous, but I think it’s harmless fun as long as everyone knows it’s a joke 😅. Read more about it here.

  • WeWork ($WE) might go bankrupt pretty soon 😬. Source.

  • Olumide Gbenro (an O.G in the digital nomad space) is working with the Indonesian government to create an ethical and sustainable digital nomad program in Bitung City, Indonesia. They’re inviting ~100 nomads to come to the island for ~1 month (accommodations will be free!) to be the first participants in the program and become ambassadors. Fun fact: I applied and was actually accepted into the program(!!!), but unfortunately the timelines no longer work for me as I pursue this move to Spain.

  • Flatio just released a report on the state of Digital Nomadism in 2023. 53% of those surveyed who identify as a digital nomad are ages 30-39.

  • Canada issued a U.S. travel advisory members of the LGBTQ2S+ community due to the discrimination they may face after at least 18 states passed laws that limit or ban things like gender-affiming medical care, or teaching about sexual orientation in schools. Source.

  • Canada’s tourism seems to be slowing down since we escaped lockdowns. Source. With the job losses and the fact that so many are living paycheque to paycheque, this isn’t surprising!
